All I Have is Christ

For those of you just now discovering my blog or stumbling on it, maybe you even stubbed your left big toe on it (I guess its possible),HI! I'm Sarah and I am a student at Clemson University and I go to a church called Crosspoint up here in Tigertown. This past Sunday our worship band played a song I had never heard before, Its called (as some of you may have already deduced) "All I have is Christ." Let me tell you what, that song was a nice 2X4 to the face, it made a resounding smack. Just because the lyrics are so powerful, let me share them with you super quick.

"I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope, that you would own
a rebel to your will
and if you had not loved me first
I would refuse you still.

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God's love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace.

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

Now Lord I would be yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow your commands
Could never come from me
Oh Father use my ransomed life
In any way you choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You."

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

Now I don't know about the rest of y'all, but WOW! Talk about powerful. Each verse is completely saturated with truth and then the end of each verse just leaves you standing there in utter desolation. Completely stripped of any preconceived idea that our righteousness could be attributed to us.

And If you had not loved me first, I would refuse you still.

I would refuse you still.

To me that is the absolute bare existence of man. We are such a stubborn and self centered people, the lengths that we would go to in order to believe that we are self sufficient and independent are ridiculous. I mean think about it. There are tons of religions and world views out there that require endless things in order to guarantee salvation. Some require money, others require endless acts of charity, some require pilgrimages, some extreme ones even require sacrificing the lives of those you love. According to the Bible, one of the foundational aspects of salvation is admitting your inability to save yourself and relying on the strength of Christ to save you. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Its a gift and all we have to do is accept it!

But instead look at all of the things we will sacrifice for the sake of our pride. In his book "Mere Christianity" C.S. Lewis says this about pride:

“For pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.”

For real you guys. And trust me, you're reading the blog of one of the most prideful, stubborn people most people know. (Its so stupid, I even take a small amount of pride in that). Pride has no concern for having anything, only having more than the next guy. Anyway, enough on that tangent. Back to the song...

There's a link to it on youtube at the bottom of this post, I would recommend actually listening to it if you have the time. Thanks for taking the time to read what I have to say. Like it, share it, don't do either, whatever. Until next time....
